About Me

My name is Graham Markwick I am the Group Scout Leader and have been involved with Scouting since 1993 It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our Scout Group, I hope you will enjoy all we have to offer and will participate in as many things as possible.

We are a thriving Group which every year is growing, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Each section has at least two young leaders14-18 yrs who are Explorer Section which is a District provision that our Scouts feed into.

The Executive Committee which is headed up by Colin Payne the Group Chairman is slowly increasing in numbers due to increased proactive recruiting in the last year, this allows the Group to stage such events as the Scout Carnival which year on year is a testament to our community involvement.

We have a parental base of some 40 families who are supportive, this support needs to be nurtured so that we utilise your help in in enabling our Group to achieve its full potential and develop. Our primary aim is to continue delivering 'First Class Scouting' to the young people of Burton.

As parents, you are automatically a member of the Group Council and are welcome to attend any of our Group Committee meetings and help with fundraising events, if it was not for your help in these areas, we would not be able to give our best for the Scouting of your child. I will meet you all in due course. As leaders, we strive to give your child the best experience in scouting, this is a three way event you, your young people and the leaders. Safety, welfare and ensuring your young person receive a first class scouting experience here at Burton.

Yours in Scouting

Graham Markwick (GSL)

Welcome from the Chairman

I have been involved with the Group as Chairman since 2005 and have enjoyed the experience, learnt a few things along the way from the experienced team of leaders, past and present, and had a good deal of fun doing so. I have lived in Burton most of my life apart from a short 22 year stint within the Army. I was a Cub in Burton, a Scout and a Venture Scout. I now have 2 boys in the Scouts who were both Beavers and Cubs. As Chairman my role, along with an elected committee, is to provide the administrative support to the group and assist the leaders in achieving their objectives and aims of developing and supporting your child through Scouting. This is achieved with support from parents and others from the community who still support Scouting in the form of an executive committee. Fund raising in various enjoyable forms takes place regularly and we could always do with an extra pair of hands.

It is heartening to see that so many young people still like to attend our group and this is great encouragement to our executive committee members, leaders, assistant leaders and helpers, all of who voluntarily give up many hours per week to ensure your child receives the correct balance between training and enjoyment.

We have spent many years fund raising to achieve an acceptable standard of facilities, a high standard of equipment and safe professional training that we utilise for the benefit of your child and, unfortunately, we have not finished yet. We, as a group, intend to develop our current site hopefully in the near future, which will involve further hard work and co-operation with and from the parents and further support from the Burton Community, who do hold us in high regard as we are currently committed to repaying a loan to the Scout Association which we took out in order to ensure the "new" building reached a reasonable standard.

We also aim to continually improve the current building and the equipment to ensure current safety recommendations are met, and to ensure the facilities are safe for your child (and our leaders etc.!!) As a parent/guardian you are automatically a member of our Group Council, which meets once a year at the Annual General Meeting, and at which, members of the public are elected to the Group Executive Committee (Leaders are automatically represented on the Committee!) This meeting normally takes place in late May early June.

The Group Executive Committee meets regularly, every 6 weeks, normally on a Monday in the Scout Hut. I extend an invitation to you to attend this meeting, if only for curiosity! You will be made to feel welcome and will obtain an insight into the myriad of problems we face, sometimes daily.

I look forward to meeting you, and if you wish to attend, or help the Group in any way, please contact the leader in charge of your child's unit.
